How to Plan your Leave Before your Laparoscopic Surgery:
Why Planning Matters
Taking time off work before surgery isn’t always easy. Many people feel guilty for stepping away or worry about the impact on their team. That stress is completely normal- but it doesn’t have to take over.
Planning ahead can reduce anxiety, protect your health, and set you up for a smoother recovery. Feeling prepared means you’re more likely to focus on what matters: healing, rest, and peace of mind.
Step 1: Communicate
Who to Inform:
Your manager or direct supervisor
Human Resources (if needed)
Key teammates or collaborators
When to Have the Conversation:
Aim for 2–3 weeks before surgery (or as soon as your surgery date is confirmed)
Bring a rough plan to the conversation to show you've thought it through
Sample Email/Talking Points:
Hi [Manager],
I wanted to let you know that I have a surgery scheduled for [date], and I’ll need to take leave from [start date] to [anticipated return]. I’m working on a plan to hand over my key tasks and ensure everything runs smoothly while I’m away. I’ll also create a short handover doc and nominate a point of contact. Let me know if there’s anything you'd like me to prioritise.
Thanks for your support — I really appreciate it.
Step 2: Delegate
List Your Current Tasks:
Weekly responsibilities
Key projects with deadlines
Recurring meetings or approvals
Who Can Cover Each One?
Assign by role, expertise, or availability
Consider peer-sharing or temporary redistribution of work
Handover Document Template:
Name: [Your Name]
Leave Dates: [Start] to [Return]
Main Responsibilities While Away:
• Task A - Contact: [Name]
• Task B - Contact: [Name]
• Pending Items: [e.g. X report due]
Where to Find Files/Docs: [Drive/Sharepoint link]
Emergency Contact (if applicable): [Backup contact name/email]
Step 3: Prepare to Disconnect
Out-of-Office Setup:
Set up your email and voicemail with a friendly message
Include who to contact in your absence
Message Template:
Thanks for your message. I'm currently on medical leave and will return on [date]. For anything urgent, please contact [colleague name and contact].
Set Boundaries for Communication:
Decide whether you'll check emails occasionally or fully disconnect
Share this boundary with your team before you go
Tidy Up for Your Return:
Wrap up loose ends, clear your workspace, and leave notes for yourself
Take a breath, let go of your belly, you are signed off and ready for surgery!
